Trouble Shooting

If you are having any difficulties with your Ski Tracks then please read the following information or download the User Guide.

Upgrading Ski Tracks

On some upgrades we may have made changes to the algorithms or internal formats. Once the upgrade is installed tracks, photographs and other data might be automatically updated.

This can take up to a few minutes - please do not close the application while this process takes place.

Track Recording Issues

When you start a track the duration counter starts to count everyone second, however the track will actually record any locations until they are accurate enough. Once track recording starts you may lock the phone or put Ski Tracks into background and run other applications.

Points to remember:

  1. You must save your track before it will appear in the tracks list.

  2. Photographs can not be taken before the first good location is received.

Location Issues

The current version of Ski Tracks has an improved GPS first location feature that get the first location in around 5-15 seconds in most cases. However 3G phones are slower at getting their first fix. If you get no  GPS indicators check that you have enabled Ski Tracks for location services.

Settings->General->Location Services.

Points to remember:

  1. Location will not work indoors.

  2. Location accuracy can be effected by iPhone position, foliage, reduced visible sky area (such as being in a valley), other electronic or magnetic devices close by.

  3. Location WILL NOT WORK IN AIRPLANE MODE.

Battery Life

In iOS 4 application can receive locations while running in background, however we strongly recommend that you close applications such a the compass or other that are using the GPS receiver as this will reduce battery much quicker. This application can run in background and receive accurate locations when the phone is locked.

There are a number of factors that can effect your Battery:

  1. Temperature - Try an keep the battery at room to body temperature, ideally place the iPhone in an inside jacket pocket.

  2. Turn off unwanted features such as bluetooth (Settings->General), 3G (Settings>General->Network), Notifications (Settings).

  3. Use auto-lock - this application will override this feature while recording if using proximity sensor mode but the battery monitor will use the auto-lock feature if battery is low.

  4. The number of charge cycles.

Finally if you find that your battery is limiting your track recording or you are planning a trip where it will not be possible to charge the phone then there are a number of  external battery devices available.

Accuracy

Track statistics such as Max Speed, Slope Angle are calculated on good quality location data over approximately 100 meters (300  feet). Our tests have shown that the accuracy is about ±5% depending on location.

With regard to Ski Distance, Ski Vertical these are accurate to around ±5% again depending on location.

Lat / Lon displays are relatively accurate to between 5-50 meters.

YOU SHOULD NOT HOWEVER RELY ON THE LOCATION INFORMATION FOR SAFETY OR LIFE SAVING SITUATIONS.

Photographs

Adding photographs to the internal photo library strips the geo-tagging information.

Photographs are only geo-tagged when used within the application, exported as KMZ files or emailed.
